cat food

I cooked some cat food to replace the canned food.

Step 1. Make a "smell-good" mixture

I bought them from the Chinese grocery store Ranch 99. The quantity listed below is the smallest package I can find.

  • Chicken heart 1Lb
  • Pork liver 1Lb
  • Swai fish nugget 1Lb (This one has no bones)
  • Salmon fish edges 1Lb (This one has some bones and I removed the bones)
Basically equal weight of each item. I ground them with food processor, and put the mixture to 1Lb per zip bag. I stored zip bags in the freezer.

Step 2. Prepare chicken meat and make chicken meal

When I bought chicken breasts with bones or chicken leg quarters, I cut bones, skin, and fat aside from meat.

I ground the chicken meat with food processor. Put them in 1Lb per zip bag, and store the bags in the freezer.

For the remaining bones, skin and fat, I put them in a pressure pot cooker, added water to submerge the chicken, and cooked for 0.5 hr. Then I used a blender to blend it into a complete mush (speed at "High" for 1 minute) to become a chicken meal. I used a strainer to filter the chicken meal to get rid of any small bone fragments. I put them into big 1 gallon zip bags at 3Lb per bag.

Fun fact, this chicken meal will turn to gelatin like in the fridge.

Step 3. Cat food assemble

I put in a baking dish one bag each of "smell-good" mixture, ground chicken meat, chicken meal. I mixed them together.

I covered the baking dish with aluminum foil, and baked in the oven at 350F for 1 hour.
I broke 4 capsules of Vitamin E (400IU) to add the inside liquid to the tray. Then I used a spoon to mix everything again, and aliquoted them into small 5.5 Oz plastic containers. This makes about 16-20 containers.
I keep 3 containers in the fridge, and the remaining ones in the freezer.
Each morning, half a container of food is put on the bowl, microwaved for 10 seconds, mixed, and given to Aster.

Notes
  • Aster eats half a container a day. He also eats 1/2 cup dry food. With that speed of consumption, I just cook this once every month or 1.5 months.
  • Aster's poop smells less after he eats this food.
